Attorney General Steve Marshall Announces Court of Criminal Appeals Upholds Murder Conviction in Jefferson County

(MONTGOMERY)—Attorney General Steve Marshall announced that the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals affirmed the conviction of Samson Strickland, 22, for murder. Strickland was convicted in Jefferson County Circuit Court on January 10, 2020, for the murder of Timothy Anthony.

The evidence at trial showed that on April 26, 2016, Timothy Anthony was shot and killed at a convenience store located on 10 Avenue in Birmingham. The victim’s twin brother was waiting outside the store when the shots were fired and saw two men who he did not recognize running away. The victim told his brother the nickname of the man who shot him and a subsequent investigation revealed that person to be Samson Strickland. The victim’s brother identified Strickland both in pretrial lineups and in the courtroom as one of the men he saw running away from the convenience store after his brother was murdered.

Jefferson County District Attorney Danny Carr’s office successfully prosecuted this case and obtained a guilty verdict. Strickland was sentenced to 35 years’ imprisonment for his crime. Strickland sought to have his conviction reversed on appeal.

The Attorney General's Criminal Appeals Division handled the case during the appeals process, arguing for the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals to affirm Strickland’s conviction. The Court did so in a decision issued Friday, April 16.

Attorney General Marshall commended Assistant Attorney General Michael Nunnelley for his successful work on this case, and thanked District Attorney Danny Carr and his staff for their valuable assistance in defending the murder conviction.
