(Montgomery, Ala) – Attorney General Steve Marshall announced the conviction of Tiffany Alexander Fields for the theft of hydrocodone tablets from a Montgomery area nursing home while she was employed as the facility’s director of nursing.
Fields pleaded guilty before Montgomery Circuit Court Judge Monet Gaines to one count of Theft of Property Second Degree. Fields was sentenced to 18 months in the custody of the Department of Corrections community corrections program and surrendered her Alabama nursing license.
The Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit investigated the case after it was referred by the Alabama Department of Public Health. The investigation determined that from November 2022 to April 2023, Fields used pre-signed prescription pads left by the facility’s medical director to fax in prescriptions to the facility’s pharmacy. Fields then received the narcotics from the pharmacy’s courier and then kept the narcotics. The case was prosecuted by Assistant Attorney General Nathan Mays.
“Those entrusted with the care of patients must be held to the highest standard. This conviction reflects our unwavering commitment to protecting vulnerable patients and holding bad actors accountable,” said Attorney General Marshall. “I commend our Medicaid Fraud Control Unit for their steadfast pursuit of justice.”
The Medicaid Fraud Control Unit is a division of the Alabama Attorney General’s Office and receives 75% of its funding ($1.5 million for fiscal year 2024) from the US Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General.
