(Montgomery, Ala)—Attorney General Steve Marshall announced that the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals affirmed the convictions of Michael McDade, 27, of Huntsville, for murder and assault in the second degree. McDade was convicted in the Madison County Circuit Court on January 16, 2025.
The evidence at trial showed that on October 8, 2021, Lyndria Cooper got into a domestic dispute with her boyfriend, Quenvtavies Fletcher, after a night of partying. Police were called to the scene and spoke with Cooper and her family, including her brother, Michael McDade. Cooper and her family later went back to her apartment to retrieve some of her belongings and a confrontation ensued between McDade and the victim. McDade shot the victim numerous times and later claimed self-defense at trial. That claim was rejected by the jury.
Madison County District Attorney Robert Broussard’s office successfully prosecuted this case and obtained guilty verdicts. McDade was sentenced to 40 years’ imprisonment for his murder conviction and ten years’ imprisonment for his assault in the second degree conviction. McDade sought to have his convictions reversed on appeal.
The Attorney General’s Criminal Appeals Division handled the case during the appeals process, arguing for the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals to affirm McDade’s convictions. The Court did so in a decision issued Friday, August 15, 2025.
Attorney General Marshall commended Assistant Attorney General Kyley Goldhagen for her successful work on this case and thanks District Attorney Robert Broussard and his staff, for their valuable assistance in defending the murder and assault in the second-degree convictions.
