(Montgomery, Ala) – Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall joined fellow leaders in urging the United States Senate to prevent a government shutdown by immediately passing a clean, short-term funding extension recently approved by the U.S. House of Representatives.
In a letter sent to Senate leadership, Attorney General Marshall and others stressed that the livelihoods of millions of Americans are at stake if Congress fails to act before the September 30 deadline.
“A clean, short-term continuing resolution may not be ideal, but it is the responsible course of action to keep the federal government functioning while long-term budget negotiations continue,” Attorney General Marshall said. “This has been a clear priority for President Trump and his administration, and I stand with them in calling on the Senate to act now. This measure ensures that servicemen and women, border agents, state and local law enforcement, and first responders can continue protecting our nation and communities without disruption.”
“If the government shuts down, the blame will rest squarely with Democrats in Congress who are choosing partisanship over the American people,” Marshall said.
The letter warns that a shutdown would not only threaten public safety and national security, but also cause unnecessary hardships for American families, including seniors who rely on Social Security services that would be interrupted.
Attorney General Marshall criticized Democrats in the Senate for blocking the same kind of short-term resolution they have supported numerous times under the Biden Administration, noting that partisan demands for $1.5 trillion in new spending and policy riders are holding government operations hostage.
The letter calls on Senate leaders to follow through on bipartisan progress already made toward passing individual appropriations bills and to use the short-term extension to restore responsible, regular-order budgeting.
