(Montgomery, Ala) – Attorney General Steve Marshall announced that the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals affirmed the conviction of William Thomas Maddux, 35, of Cullman, for murder. Maddux was convicted in the Cullman County Circuit Court on October 16, 2024.

The evidence at trial showed that in November 2017 Maddux went to the residence of his mother and stepfather and was intoxicated at the time of his visit. Maddux refused to leave, and his stepfather went inside to call 911. Maddux broke into the house and shot and killed his stepfather who was on the phone with 911 when he died.

Cullman County District Attorney Champ Crocker’s office successfully prosecuted this case and obtained a guilty verdict. Maddux was sentenced to 99 years’ imprisonment for his murder conviction. Maddux sought to have his conviction reversed on appeal.

The Attorney General’s Criminal Appeals Division handled the case during the appeals process, arguing for the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals to affirm Maddux’s conviction. The Court did so in a decision issued Friday, August 15, 2025.

Attorney General Marshall commended Assistant Attorney General Kyley Goldhagen for her successful work on this case and thanked District Attorney Champ Crocker and his staff, for their valuable assistance in defending the murder conviction.
