(Montgomery, Ala) – Attorney General Steve Marshall announced that the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals affirmed the conviction of Leo Alexander, 40, of Mobile, for murder. Alexander was convicted in the Mobile County Circuit Court on October 10, 2024.

The evidence at trial showed that on October 15, 2020, the victim, Machavellia Bagsby, was at home with his wife, mother, and children, getting ready for work, when his mother was awakened by numerous gunshots. The victim’s wife discovered the victim at the front door of the house. The victim subsequently died of five separate gunshot wounds. An intensive police investigation determined that the victim and his killer worked together at a local business and there was domestic conflict between numerous individuals at the business. Evidence gathered by the police conclusively linked Alexander to the murder and he was found guilty by the jury at the conclusion of his trial.

Mobile County District Attorney Keith Blackwood’s office successfully prosecuted this case and obtained a guilty verdict. Alexander was sentenced to life imprisonment for his murder conviction. Alexander sought to have his conviction reversed on appeal.

The Attorney General’s Criminal Appeals Division handled the case during the appeals process, arguing for the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals to affirm Alexander’s conviction. The Court did so in a decision issued Friday, January 30, 2026.

Attorney General Marshall commended Assistant Attorney General Stephen Bockman for his successful work on this case and thanks District Attorney Keith Blackwood and his staff, for their valuable assistance in defending the murder conviction.
