(Geneva, Ala) — Attorney General Steve Marshall today announced the arrest of Ashley Powell, the Geneva County Circuit Clerk.
Powell, 52, was charged with violating the State’s ethics laws by using her official position or office for personal gain. Specifically, the indictment charges Powell with using her position as circuit clerk to illegally pay herself over $93,000 out of public funds.
Under Alabama law, use of office for personal gain is a Class B felony punishable by two to 20 years in prison.
The Attorney General’s Special Prosecutions Division is prosecuting the case. Due to the ongoing investigation, no additional details are being released at this time.
