(Montgomery, Ala) – Attorney General Steve Marshall announced the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals affirmed the reckless manslaughter and three counts of second-degree assault convictions of Demetrius Dewayne Jackson, 23, of Birmingham. Jackson was convicted in Jefferson County Circuit Court on February 3, 2025.

The evidence at trial showed that in July 2020 Jackson was involved in a shootout at the Riverchase Galleria in Hoover which killed an 8-year-old child and injured three others. Video footage showed that a confrontation began near the food court which resulted in multiple shots being fired inside the Galleria.

Jefferson County District Attorney Danny Carr successfully prosecuted this case and obtained guilty verdicts. Jackson was sentenced to twenty years’ imprisonment for his manslaughter conviction and ten years’ imprisonment for each of his assault convictions. Jackson sought to have his convictions reversed on appeal.

The Attorney General’s Criminal Appeals Division handled the case during the appeals process, arguing for the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals to affirm Jackson’s convictions. The Court did so in a decision issued Friday, September 18, 2026.

Attorney General Marshall commended Assistant Attorneys General Anne Hill and Emma Revels for their successful work on this case and thanks District Attorney Danny Carr and his staff for their valuable assistance in obtaining the convictions.
