(Montgomery, Ala) – Attorney General Steve Marshall today hosted the 27th Annual Alabama Attorney General’s Law Enforcement Summit, his ninth and final as head of the Office. Since its start, the Summit has given Alabama’s officers and prosecutors a place to learn from one another, and continuing education on the trends facing law enforcement remains its core purpose. This year’s program included a case study of the 2016 Pulse Night Club shooting in Orlando, Florida, and a look at other worst-case scenarios. The day also included a memorial ceremony honoring Alabama’s fallen officers.

“Law enforcement is constantly required to adapt and evolve to meet the needs of their communities, and there’s no more effective way to do so than by hearing directly from colleagues who have lived through these horrific events and can methodically examine them so others may learn,” Attorney General Marshall said. “Each of today’s presenters offered invaluable background and data that I am confident will help prevent future crimes. I am deeply grateful to my team at the Attorney General’s Office for assembling such a valuable event.”

Marshall reflected on his time in office, “Serving as Alabama’s Attorney General has been one of the greatest honors of my life, and standing alongside Alabama’s law enforcement community has been among the most meaningful parts of that service. I’ve seen firsthand the courage, professionalism, and sacrifice you bring to this calling every day. While this may be my final Summit as Attorney General, my respect and gratitude for the men and women of law enforcement will remain long after my time in office comes to an end.”

Summit Presentations

Real Time Ops Consulting Founder and CEO Jay Draisin and Vice President Captain (Ret.) Scott Smith presented “Untold Truths: Pulse Night Club Shooting, Orlando, Florida,” offering insight into the realities of, and lessons from, that tragedy.

The closing presentation, “Worst Case Scenarios: Lessons from True Crime,” was delivered by Alice LaCour and Brett Talley, co-hosts of The Prosecutors: A True Crime Podcast. They examined challenging cases and the lessons they hold for those who investigate and prosecute such crimes.

Memorial Ceremony

Attorney General Marshall led a ceremony honoring two Alabama officers who lost their lives in the line of duty over the past year:

Conservation Enforcement Officer Senior Shawn Nixon, Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division, died November 23, 2025, after suffering a fatal heart attack during a search for a hidden firearm in Lincoln. Officer Nixon served the Division for 13 years.

Corporal David M. Hathcock, Montgomery Police Department, died February 22, 2026, from injuries sustained in a vehicle crash on November 9, 2025. Corporal Hathcock served the Montgomery Police Department with honor for 20 years.

“Honoring each officer we have lost is a chance to reflect on the monumental sacrifice our officers face every single day,” Marshall said. “To our law enforcement family, I am humbled by your years of dedication and sacrifice, all in service of the communities we love. It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve in the trenches alongside these men and women of Alabama, and it means everything to recognize those who gave their lives doing one of the hardest jobs that exists.”
