(MONTGOMERY)—Attorney General Steve Marshall announced that the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals affirmed the conviction of Andrae Norvel, 30, of Huntsville, for capital murder. Norvel was convicted in the Madison County Circuit Court on December 10, 2021.

The evidence at trial showed that on the evening of November 25, 2017, a security guard at the Allure nightclub witnessed an argument between Norvel and the victim, Mark Chandler. After a brief confrontation, the victim drove off with another individual but not before yelling something at Norvel. Within minutes, Norvel got into a vehicle and pursued the victim, who he killed by shooting into his fleeing automobile. Many of the events were captured on videotape that was played for the jury.

Madison County District Attorney Robert Broussard’s office successfully prosecuted this case and obtained the guilty verdict. Norvel was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Norvel sought to have his conviction reversed on appeal.

The Attorney General’s Criminal Appeals Division handled the case during the appeals process, arguing for the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals to affirm Norvel’s conviction. The Court did so in a decision issued Friday, June 16, 2023.

Attorney General Marshall commends Assistant Attorney General Steve Dodd for his successful work on this case and thanks District Attorney Robert Broussard and his staff for their valuable assistance in defending this conviction.
