(Montgomery, Ala) – Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall today commended the New York Appellate Division for overturning the nearly half-billion-dollar civil judgment against President Donald J. Trump and his businesses, calling the ruling a critical affirmation of the rule of law.
The court overturned Attorney General Letitia James’s $464 million fine against President Trump, making it clear that the punishment went far beyond the law.
Attorney General Marshall, along with a coalition of 15 states, filed a friend-of-the-court brief urging this outcome.
“This ruling is a victory for the rule of law over political retribution,” Attorney General Steve Marshall said. “New York’s Attorney General promised on the campaign trail to weaponize her office against President Trump and then set out to do just that. Today, the court made clear that the law must not be twisted to serve partisan retribution. Alabama is proud to stand in defense of fairness and the Constitution.”
The appellate court upheld limited findings against Trump and his companies but determined that the sweeping financial penalty imposed by the trial court was unconstitutional and unsustainable.
Attorney General Marshall made clear that Alabama will continue to stand with other states to fight back against prosecutors who abuse their power for political ends.
