AG STRANGE HOSTS SAFETY AND PRIVACY ASSEMBLY WITH
FACEBOOK AT SPAIN PARK HIGH SCHOOL
(MONTGOMERY) – Attorney General Luther Strange and Brooke Oberwetter of
the Facebook Public Policy Office will present the “Safety and Privacy on Facebook”
program tonight to an assembly of students and parents at Spain Park High School. The
interactive assembly focuses on the tools and features available on Facebook that allow
users to control their privacy, and the resources available on Facebook to learn more
about digital citizenship and online safety.
“Just as we must address bullying, harmful content and other dangers in our
schools and in our neighborhoods, we also must address them online,” Attorney
General Strange said. “It is important that we provide the students and parents of
Alabama with safe practices and tools to help protect themselves and their families
online.”
“At Facebook, we think of safety as an ongoing conversation between teachers,
students, parents, non-profit groups, government, and the private sector,” said Brooke
Oberwetter of Facebook Public Policy. “We’re pleased that Attorney General Strange is
taking the lead in facilitating that conversation in Alabama, and we’re happy to join him
to help educate Alabama students and families about using Facebook safely and
responsibly.”
Dr. Ken Jarnagin, principal of Spain Park High School, stated “As our students
are engaging in higher levels of digital learning and interaction, safety and personal
security issues are a top concern for our students, parents, and community. Spain Park
is pleased to host this informative event for the Greater Birmingham community.”
Attorney General Strange previously partnered with Facebook Chief Operating
Officer Sheryl Sandberg to film a Public Service Announcement that can be found on
the Attorney General’s website and on his Facebook page. “The Internet can’t take the
place of a loving family, close friends, or a happy childhood. But it can be a positive
influence as kids grow up,” said Attorney General Strange in the PSA. “That’s why we
need to make sure the internet is a safe and secure environment for everyone.”
The Alabama Attorney General’s Office, along with 20 state and territorial
Attorneys General, joined this consumer education campaign focused around safety
and privacy. The campaign created an “Ask the Safety Team” video series and a tip
sheet on privacy which offer advice on how to control ones information online.
