AG STRANGE ANNOUNCES RAPE CONVICTION IN LAMAR COUNTY
(MONTGOMERY) – Attorney General Luther Strange announced the rape
conviction yesterday of a Sulligent man following a trial that began on Monday.
A jury in Lamar County Circuit Court found Draper Bonman guilty of second-
degree rape. A date for sentencing has not been set.
Bonman, now 38, was 34 at the time of the crime, when he had sexual
intercourse with a 15-year-old girl. Second-degree rape is a class B felony with a
punishment range of two to 20 years imprisonment and a fine of up to $30,000.
“I am pleased that my office achieved a conviction in this case,” said
Attorney General Strange. “It is appropriate that this man will be punished for
preying upon a young girl who was a minor,” said Attorney General Strange.
The Attorney General’s Criminal Trials Division prosecuted the case at the
request of the Lamar County District Attorney’s office, which recused from the
case. Attorney General Strange commended those involved in bringing this
matter to a successful conclusion, noting Assistant Attorney General Stephanie
Billingslea, chief of his Criminal Trials Division, Assistant Attorney General
Leigh Gwathney of the Criminal Trials Division, and Ashley Harbin of the
Attorney General’s Office of Victim Assistance. He also thanked the Sulligent
Police Department and the Lamar County Sheriff’s Office for their investigation.
